A brief report on
“ANALGEOCA A National Level Online Mathematics Quiz ‘’
Introduction:
The quest for Knowledge, like everything else of value, is not to be obtained easily. It must be worked for, studied for, thought for, and more than that must be prayed for.
Objective:
To enhance their knowledge and exploring new skills, quizzes redefine the education system in significant ways.
Target Group: UG & PG students of mathematics
Organizing Department: Mathematics (UG & PG)
Date & Time: 19.12.2020 from 9AM to 20.12.2020 11PM
Convener’s: Mrs.G. Usha Kumari
Mrs.V. Sudha Devi
Number of Participants: 336
Platform used: Google Quiz form
Promotional material prepared: Brochure
Conduct Methodology:
Brochure with rules and regulations shared in WhatsApp groups & mails
Quiz link shared and the link is opened from 19.12.2020,9AM to 20.12.2020,11PM.
Responses
E-certificate is generated to the students who got 40% and above.
Outcomes Achieved:
This quiz helped students identify what they know and what they don’t know. The students then have a better idea of how well they are grasping the material, hopefully motivating them to study more and helping them allocate their study time effectively by focusing on the information that still needs more practice.
Observations and shortcomings:
The Participation in online quiz showed that the students really like these platforms in which they can take part hassle free, its low costing, time saving and more accurate in data wise. However, some students are not technology friendly.so on this issue we have to work and organize more activities.
Recommendations for future improvements:
The future of quizzing lies on our desire to transform learning of our students. While the tools are in abundance, the focus needs to be on the content.
A brief report on “National Mathematics Day - Virtual Celebrations”
Date: 22-12-2020 Time: 9.30 am – 12.30 pm
Introduction:
Maths is one of the basic sciences of life. It can be said that the first thing a person learns, apart from reading and writing is how to add and subtract. In other words, we can say that Mathematics is the cradle of all creations, without which the world cannot move.
Shakuntala Devi once said, “What is Mathematics? It is only a systematic effort of solving puzzles posed by nature”. Be it a cook or a former, a carpenter or a mechanic, a shopkeeper or a doctor, an engineer or a scientist, a musician or a magician, everyone needs Mathematics in their day to day life.
Therefore, to raise awareness among students, about the importance of Mathematics, every year Mathematics day is celebrated on 22nd, December to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s famous mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan.
Objectives:
The objectives behind the celebrations are
To raise awareness among students about the importance of Mathematics for the development of humanity.
To motivate, enthuse and inculcate a positive attitude towards learning Mathematics among the younger generation of the country.
Platform Used: Microsoft teams
Participants: 200 students (III B.Sc. MPC, MPCs, MECs, MSCs, MCCs students, and
II MSc Mathematics students).
Programme:
The event started with invoking God’s blessings by Sr.A. Balasree, II M.Sc. Mathematics followed by welcome remarks by our dynamic Principal Dr. Jasintha Quadras.
The first segment of National Mathematics Day - Virtual Celebrations was prepared and hosted by students of II M.Sc Mathematics for the final year B.Sc MPC, MPCs, MECs, MSCs, MCCs students. Ms. Jasmine of II M.Sc. Mathematics shared a presentation on the Mathematical Genius-Srinivasa Ramanujan in which she outlined the life history of Srinivasa Ramanujan and also highlighted his extraordinary findings. Ms. A. Sangeetha of II M.Sc. Mathematics gave a brief presentation on LaTeX in which she clearly explained how LaTeX can be used effectively for typesetting purposes in Mathematics. The participants were shown a brief video presentation consisting of important clippings from the movie “The Man Who Knew Infinity”. This video was prepared and edited by Sr.A.Balasree and K.Satvika of II M.Sc Mathematics and with this presentation the first segment concluded.
The second segment of National Mathematics Day - Virtual Celebrations had a guest lecture
by Dr. Maheswara Rao Valluri. The guest speaker Dr. Maheswara Rao Valluri was introduced by Mrs. G. Usha Kumari, Head, Department of Mathematics.Dr. Maheswara Rao Valluri is currently an Associate Professor at School of Mathematical and Computing Sciences, Fiji National University. He obtained his Ph.D. under supervision of Prof. K.Suvarna from Sri Krishnadevaraya University, India. His current research interests include computational number theory and algebraic geometry, and applications in cryptography. He has published 21 papers (10 single authored papers).
Dr.Maheswara Rao Valluri gave a lecture on “Mysterious Beautiful Prime Numbers”.
He commenced his talk by introducing prime numbers, composite numbers and then recalled the following results: Fundamental theorem of Arithmetic, Euclid’s theorem, Goldbach’s conjecture. He explained with examples some of the primes like twin primes, cousin primes, sexy primes, prime gaps, Fermat’s primes, Mersenne’s primes, Sophie Germain primes, Carol primes, Centred triangular primes, Cullen primes, Kynea primes, Ramanujan primes, and Factorial primes. He exposed the students to a list of famous open problems in Mathematics which are unsolved till date and encouraged the students to solve the following problem proposed by him:
“The number n = 3 k +2 is prime if and only if 2n-12≡ −1(modn)”.
The speaker assured to reward the student who solves the above problem. He concluded the session by sharing the thrust areas of research in Number theory.
Mrs S. Padmavathi concluded the session by proposing a vote of thanks.
